Register for the January embark Orientation session for incoming, degree-seeking students!

embark Orientation is required for ALL incoming, degree-seeking students.

embark Orientation at UNC Asheville is the first and most important step in becoming a Bulldog and is required for your success at UNC Asheville. During embark Orientation, you will learn about academic advising, UNC Asheville's curriculum, course registration processes, campus resources, and much more. Each embark session is also packed with opportunities to meet other new students!

embark Orientation is required for all incoming degree-seeking transfer and freshman students. Keep this in mind while creating travel and work plans. We want to provide a great foundation for you to start your academic career at UNC Asheville!

January 2019 Embark Session 

Friday, January 11, 2019

8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Highsmith Union, Alumni Hall
Check-in will open at 8:00 a.m. in the Highsmith Union Grotto (building #6 on the campus map).

The online registration form for the January 11,2019 embark Orientation session is open and accepting registrations. Parents, family members, and other guests who are planning to attend embark should complete a separate registration form.

Quick Start embark Orientation sessions (For local, transfer and post-baccalaureate students ONLY)

Local, transfer, and post-baccalaureate students can attend one Quick Start Session in December to complete your embark requirement.  Quick Start Sessions are designed to be an abbreviated version of orientation that provides you with information from the student life and academic advising to help prepare you for a successful start at UNC Asheville.  Quick Start sessions do not allow participants to meet with a faculty advisor.  

Quick start sessions will take place on Monday, December 10th; Thursday, December 13th; or Tuesday, December 18thEach session will take place from 5pm-9pm.  

Important Information for On-Campus Students Who Register for January's embark Orientation Session

If you have registered to attend the embark Orientation session on Friday, January 11th and you have an on-campus housing assignment for the 2018-19 academic year, you will need to make plans to move into your residence hall on Thursday, January 10th.

If you are living on-campus, you will need to complete the early arrival agreement form ASAP in order to move-in your residence hall on Thursday, January 10th.

  • To do this, log into your OnePort account and select the Housing Portal.
  • Once there, go to menu item titled “Forms and Agreements” and select "Early Arrivals & Late Stay Requests" to access the early arrival form.
  • Completing this form alerts our Housing Office to your need to move-in on that day.

About embark Orientation

During embark Orientation, you will learn about academic advising, UNC Asheville's curriculum, course registration processes, campus resources, and much more. Each embark session is packed with activities as well as opportunities to meet other new students. embark employs UNC Asheville upperclassman students, known as the Blue Crew Orientation Leaders, to assist with helping you to meet other new students, learn about campus resources, navigate the curriculum requirements, and find your niche.

embark Orientation is required for all new, incoming degree-seeking transfer and freshman students. Only incoming, degree-seeking students can participate in the student embark Orientation sessions. Parents, family members and guests who wish to attend embark Orientation must register for the Parent/Family embark session that runs concurrent to the embark session their student is registered to attend.

Information for the required Online Advising and Registration (OAR) Course will be sent out to your UNC Asheville email beginning mid- to late-semester by onestop@unca.edu. You may sign up for your preferred embark session before you finish the OAR Course.

Orientation Fee

Transition and Parent Programs does not receive funds from the state of North Carolina nor from UNC Asheville. In turn, embark Orientation operates on a self-sustained budget and must cover all expenses associated with providing an Orientation session.

A non-refundable $150 orientation fee is placed on the student account as part of tuition and fees once a student registers for classes. The orientation fee includes meals, embark orientation handbook, handouts, embark water bottle, staffing, facility usage, and programming throughout each orientation session. Students who do not attend embark Orientation, or those who attend but subsequently do not attend UNC Asheville, will still be billed for the orientation fee. The fee is not waivable or refundable.

Please do not send an orientation fee payment; the fee will appear on your student account. 

Before Registering for embark

The first step you need to take is to submit your enrollment deposit to the Office of Admissions

Once you submit your enrollment deposit, you will receive emails about the upcoming semester, including information about registering for embark Orientation, the Online Advising and Registration (OAR) course, course registration, and tips to help you prepare for the upcoming semester.

Once you receive information regarding registering for embark Orientation, complete your registration as soon as possible. Unless there are extenuating circumstances, we are unable to open sessions once they have been filled due to limited space.

For GPS use, the university’s address is One University Heights, Asheville, NC 28804. You can also use our driving directions, which are noted below:

From the North (on I-26): Take Exit 25 for NC-251. Turn left at the traffic light at the end of the ramp onto Broadway Street/NC-251. From Broadway, you can either enter campus via Campus Drive or via WT Weaver Boulevard. Scroll toward the bottom of this page for instructions for both options.

From the West (on I-40): Take Exit 46B (on the left) for I-240E/I-26W toward Asheville. Take Exit 4A (on the left) onto I-26W/US-19N/US-23N/US-70W toward Weaverville. Take Exit 25 for NC-251. Turn right at the end of the ramp onto Broadway Street/NC-251. From Broadway, you can either enter campus via Campus Drive or via WT Weaver Boulevard. Scroll toward the bottom of this page for instructions for both options.

From the South (on I-26): Take Exit 4A (on the left) onto I-26W/US-19N/US-23N/US-70W toward Weaverville. Take Exit 25 for NC-251. Veer right at the end of the ramp onto Broadway Street/NC-251. From Broadway, you can either enter campus via Campus Drive or via WT Weaver Boulevard. Scroll toward the bottom of this page for instructions for both options.

From the East (on I-40): Take Exit 53B for I-240W toward Asheville. Take Exit 5A for Merrimon Avenue/US-25. Turn left at 4th traffic light onto WT Weaver Boulevard (approximately 1.25 miles away). Proceed 1/2 mile to the roundabout/traffic circle. Take the first exit in the roundabout/traffic circle onto University Heights. Once you are at the top of the hill, you will need to veer to the right. Afterward, you will take the first road on your left (which continues as University Heights). You will ascend a steep hill and then, as you begin to descend it, the designated parking for embark Orientation will be on your right (Parking lots P11 and P12). Student staff will be available in this area to assist you in finding a parking space.

Directions if you are entering campus via W.T. Weaver Boulevard:

Once you are on W.T. Weaver Boulevard, drive to the roundabout, which serves as the main entrance of campus (you will see a large UNC Asheville sign at the roundabout). Follow the signage that will lead you up the hill on University Heights. Once you are at the top of the hill, you will need to veer to the right. Afterward, you will take the first road on your left (which continues as University Heights). You will ascend a steep hill and then, as you begin to descend, the designated parking for embark Orientation will be on your right (Parking lots P11 and P12). Student staff will be available in this area to assist you in finding a parking space.

Directions if you are entering campus via Campus Drive:

Campus Drive is accessible via Broadway Street. Once on Campus Drive, you will ascend a hill that initially has a small incline (which will increase as you make your way further up the drive). When you reach the stop sign (near the top of the hill), take a sharp right turn. Parking lots P11 and P12 will be on your left. Student staff will be available in this area to assist you in finding a parking space.

Parent/Family Member Orientation Fees

  • Family/guests age 11+: $25/person
