First Generation Students

First generation college students are students who are the first in their families to attend college. Most of our programming is built around the definition that a student is the first to begin and attend college, but we welcome all students that feel they would benefit from participation. Those being the first, whether to attend or graduate, are taking huge steps in uncharted territory.

In 2010, 25% of all American undergraduate students at 4-year colleges and universities came from families in which neither parent had attended a community college or 4-year college. An additional 25% of undergraduate students indicated their parents had some college experience, but no bachelor’s degree (National Center for Education Statistics, 2010).

While this territory can be confusing – or even frightening at times – the Office of Transition and Parent Programs is committed to supporting and advocating for all of our first generation college students.

Goals of the Program

At UNC Asheville, we recognize and celebrate the significant contributions all first generation college students bring to our campus. Through your participation in our campus community, you offer fresh perspectives, challenge stereotypes commonly embraced within higher education, and add to the intellectual climate and vibrancy of UNC Asheville.

With this in mind, transition Student Programs strategically offers programming and other opportunities to accomplish the following goals.

Connection

Our programming connects transition students with on-campus departments that provide numerous resources and support for UNC Asheville students. We provide this experience through our Grab A Mug series which are informal drop-ins that provide an opportunity for you to ask questions and learn more about the services available to from department representatives.

Build Relationships

Building relationships helps you to create a support system on campus, which is a pivotal component for your success at UNC Asheville. Our transition Trips are a great opportunity to not only see more of the greater Asheville area but to also meet other students who may be experiencing a similar transition and to have some fun!
